Obedience

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all His commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:

And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.

DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 28:1-2

Would you say you’re walking in obedience?

It’s hard sometimes, isn’t it? I mean, take my children for example. My middle child got her phone earlier this year and it feels like I’m constantly telling her to step away from it. Occasionally she agrees and puts it down, only to pick it up again a few minutes later. Occasionally she gets upset that I don’t see all the times she’s stepped away from it without me saying anything. But, the majority of the time, she gets annoyed that I have given her this device but am restricting her time with it. She knows she has to do certain things before she can have her time on her phone like chores and homework and yet somehow, she ‘forgets’.

I’m not doing much better. My screen time isn’t drastically less than hers. I try to justify it by saying I’m listening to teachings or short clips on Instagram of prayers and wise words from pastors and prophets etc. But is that really better? Of course, listening to the Word helps you grow but you have to know the word yourself. You have to discipline yourself to spend time with God. That’s not going to happen if we’re constantly scrolling.

The Hebrew word for blessing is beraka and it means: prosperity; praise of God; a gift, present; treaty of peace. I also looked up the word for ‘overtake’ and it means to be able to secure, have enough, take hold upon, reach.

This is the blessing of obedience. The praise of God shall come upon you because of the gifts He has given; because He causes you to prosper. God has an agreement of peace with His children when we obey Him – how great is that?!

I’m going to dig into this a bit more over the next few posts because I think there’s a lot more to say about obedience to the Lord and His Word.

Love and blessings
