Anyone else have trouble practising this verse?
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
PSALM 37:7
Why is it so hard to just rest?
Thoughts are swirling around in my head at the moment. Things are tough. August is an expensive month for me what with school uniform to buy for my three, my youngest’s birthday, it being school holidays plus all the usual bills. I’m not working and have heard nothing from the job interview I attended two weeks ago that seemed so positive. My husband is working but I feel his resentment every time I ask for money even though he doesn’t say it with words (grunts, sighs and scowls say more than enough). I get resentful too at having to ask as if all these things don’t happen every year. (Can you tell we’re not in a good place at the mo? 🙂 )
But, God gave me a word – He gave me a promise that He would be with me, that He would never forsake me. Why then does this feel so hard?
The word ‘rest’ in Hebrew is ‘Daman’. It means to be silent, be still, wait, be dumb. So when the bible says ‘rest in the LORD’, it’s telling us to trust Him. It’s telling us to keep our mouths shut and not focus on what’s going on around us but instead to focus on Him. To wait patiently is to wait without complaining because we know He is faithful to His word. Whatever God has said, that’s what He will do.
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get distracted – distracted by what’s going on around me, things I can’t fix, by those around me who don’t know the LORD or aren’t following Him but are prospering at every turn. Yeah, I said it. Sometimes we look at those things and it’s hard not to get discouraged. It’s hard not to say ‘When is it my turn?’ But God is faithful and He is just.
Rest in the LORD.
Wait for Him to do what He said He would do.
And while you’re waiting, praise Him. Praise Him because He is God. Praise Him because He is good. Praise Him if things change and praise Him if they don’t. Why? Because God sees our hearts, He knows everything we need and He will provide in unimaginable ways when we choose to commit our way to Him.
